Road to Boston- Thursday, March 12, 2026
Each time, Julie's reply was either, "What now?" or "Yes, you are crazy."
Scott knows he can't go to every event to mark the 250th Anniversary of the Revolution over the next eight years, but he wants to make the ones that he is able to. 250 years ago, the Continental Army under George Washington's command had laid siege to Boston to try to force out the British redcoats who had occupied the town since before fighting broke out. On March 5, 1776, the Patriot cannon that had been brought overland from Fort Ticonderoga by Henry Knox opened fire. 250 years ago this weekend, Washington was about to win his first victory of the war. On March 17th, St. Patrick's Day, the British evacuated the city of Boston.
A few weeks ago, Scott saw an announcement about a Revolutionary War conference that is going to be held in Fort Plain, NY, at the end of May. In addition to over a dozen speakers over two and a half days, on the day before the conference there is a bus tour that goes from Fort Plain to Boston with a tour of siege related sites. Scott was initially interested in that, but then a few days ago, he realized that he had a Superintendent's Conference Day this very anniversary weekend. And the crazy started there. He came to realize that a trip this weekend would not only be on the actual dates, but would be cost much less then the conference and bus tour, with fewer hotel rooms he'd have to pay for and without having to lose two valuable class days with students at the end of May.
Somehow, Julie was convinced to come along for the adventure. Perhaps it was because she was not really looking forward to her conference day either. Perhaps she didn't trust Scott's driving in Boston. Or perhaps she really does think he's crazy and needs to keep an eye on him.
In any case, we got home from school today, ate a quick dinner, packed up our stuff and hit the road. We made it to Syracuse where we got a hotel, and of course Abby was ready to swim. Actually, the water wasn't bad and we had the pool to ourselves for a long while, so all three of us went in. We'll get an early start tomorrow to continue on the road to Boston.
