Gettysburg- Saturday, Dec. 27, 2014
We followed our new GPS (which is named Samantha, though time will tell whether that name sticks for as long as Lizzie's had) to Gettysburg, and arrived at about 3:30. We checked in at our hotel on Steinwehr Ave, adjacent to the main National Park property, and headed out to the battlefield. In the summer we would have had a lot of time, but this time of year, we figured we only had about an hour before sunset. Julie chose Little Round Top for our first stop, with a second stop at Devil's Den. There were a surprising number of people around, considering the time of year. Anna was experimenting with her new Canon camera she got from Santa. After exploring both of those sites on foot, we ended up on Granite Schoolhouse Road, which Julie insists we've never been on before. That seems unlikely, but we did spot several deer- a few does, a buck, and a fawn.
We stopped at the Visitors Center, but it almost 5:00 and it was just closing. We went to the Dobbin House. There may not be as many people in town as there are in the summer, but the ones that are here all came to the Dobbin House. It's always packed and we had to wait while for a table. The food is expensive for what you get, but even as packed as it is, there's not a better room than the Springhouse Tavern's barroom where we always sit. Of course, Julie got her sweetbread, which is one of the biggest reasons that we come to Gettysburg.
We thought about driving around the battlefield, perhaps following a ghost tour, but the signs all say that it closes at 7:00 now. We've decided to call it a day, and went to the hotel way earlier than we ever would in the summertime. Anna and Scott walked to Tommy's to pick up a small pizza for a snack before we went to bed.
