Smithsonians and Home- Sunday, March 15, 2015
I really wish we didn't do any touring on Sunday, but the organizers of this have other ideas, and we try to fit not one but two Smithsonians in this morning. They don't open until 10, though, and even then we got a late start. Things were complicated further when traffic patterns were being changed in the Mall area in preparation for the St. Patrick's Day parade.
When we got to the Museum of American History, we had about 45 minutes-- not near enough time for doing anything right. Mr. L. had prepared a scavenger hunt, and I was determined to play along. The short time made things frustrating, but so did the fact that there is still a lot of renovations being done, and I think quite a few things on his list were not actually on display. I worked up a sweat running around to collect the pictures anyway. When we got to the Museum if Natural History, we had only about an hour, and were supposed to fit lunch in there too. I went about trying to do the scavenger hunt there, and got down to one or two things left. The woman at the central Information desk said there was no statue of Theodore Roosevelt there, and we're convinced Mr. L. Was thinking of the "Night at the Museum."
When we gathered outside, the St. Patrick's Day parade was in full swing on Constitution Avenue. We had to get our bus load of 42 students across the parade to get to the bus. When we finally got to the bus, I was pleased that I had bought some snack items at CVS on the way back to the hotel yesterday afternoon, because trying to complete his scavenger hunt kept me from getting lunch.
Now we're facing the long bus ride home, expecting to turn in late tonight in time to get just a little sleep, perhaps, before we've got to face school tomorrow morning, the start of a full five day week with a two hour faculty meeting on Monday afternoon on top of it. *sigh* They should NOT try to fit in more sight seeing on Sunday morning.
