Road to Boston- Thursday, April 17, 2025

Sometime more than a year ago, Scott realized that the 250th anniversary of the battles of Lexington and Concord was pm the Saturday before Easter Sunday and we would certainly be off of school.  He was very excited to learn that and immediately knew that he had to be there that day.  As soon as we were able to, we made reservations at a hotel a short distance from Lexington,   Originally, it was going to be a family trip for Scott, Julie and Abby, but thinking it through, we realized it might not be the best place for a five-year old.  We're not exactly sure how the weekend will go, but we knew that we'd be up well before dawn to see the re-enactment of the battle of Lexington and the crowds off people could be over 100,000.  Julie decided to stay home with Abby.  Not wanting to go alone, Scott asked Brian S. if he wanted to go with him  It turned out that he could so now it's another guys weekend out over Easter, much like their trip to Gettysburg last year.

It's probably just as well that we decided previously that Julie and Abby were staying home because last night Abby started throwing up and she continued not being able to keep anything down today.  (She seems to be doing better this evening.)  Scott worried about leaving so far, knock wood, he feels ok.  He's keeping his fingers crossed that he won't come down with the same thing while he's here.

Scott's reservations were for Friday and Saturday night originally, but knowing how crazy Friday night and Saturday morning are likely to be, he asked Brian if we could leave on Thursday.  Brian was able to finagle a day off early, so we could drive up at a more leisurely pace and enjoy Friday more.  He picked up Brian in the early afternoon, and played the fife and drum song "Road to Boston" as we left his house.  We didn't get on the road right away though because Brian wanted to stop at Burger King for lunch.   The original plan was to get to Massachusetts and find a place to stay for the night before continuing on to Boston on Friday, but we drove more or less straight through to where we are staying for the weekend in Waltham.  We called ahead to make sure that they could take us a night early.  Even though there were some confusing signs, we got to where we are staying by 10:00.   Brian's AAA TripTik didn't work once we got detoured from the original road, and we had to resort to using Siri on Julie's phone to find the hotel.  Oddly, there are two of the same name that share the same parking lot, and of course, we chose the wrong one first.  Brian wanted to go out for some beer, but we weren't able to find any tonight.

It's likely to be a crazy weekend whatever happens.  On the local 11:00 news, they were noting that not only is it the 250th anniversary of Lexington and Concord AND Easter weekend, but it is also the weekend of the Boston Marathon and the Celtics are playing at home in an NBA championship game.  Lots of people and traffic are expected.
