Saturday, July 28, 2007: Animal Park and Comic Con
Julie’s Part:
Today Julie, Anna, and Emma went off on their own. First, they went into the desert to the Wild Animal Park. Here one can ride a tram for 50 minutes on a game preserve and watch the animals roaming freely. The park was huge, it must have covered more the Disney Animal Kingdom and Epcot combined and we walked it all. The trails were quite hilly and not tree covered. Again we were told the weather was in the triple digits. We saw giraffes, deer, birds, rhinos, and a slew of others. The paths warned us to stay on them for fear of rattlesnakes.
After the Wild Animal Park, we went to Point Loma. At this area, we saw San Diego and the ocean from a distance . It was quite lovely. There is also a monument to Cabrillo, a light house, and even tide pools. We were only there an hour, but Julie enjoyed it. Anna didn’t like it because she couldn’t swim there.
After the Point we headed for the beach. We finally found parking in Venture Cove. The girls and I played in the sand and swam in the calm water. Emma had a great time destroying the sand castles that Julie built. Anna also had fun swimming. We stayed there for two hours and both Anna and Emma had to be pulled from the water to go. Also, Emma even found a baby crab. After seeing the crab, she no loner wanted to walk for fear of her toes getting pinched off.
Upon leaving the beach, we decided we needed to eat dinner, it was about 7:00. So we headed into San Diego to find food. While driving, we found the Gas Lamp area and decided this would be a good place to eat. Julie parked in a parking garage and found that this garage was connected to a mall. YAY! So the girls and I ate Chinese food and then went shopping. Emma had her traditional noodles and Anna had her rice. The mall was packed with Comic Con people but we still found a table thanks to a kind person. After eating, we went shopping and found our way to Macy’s. Here both girls got new pjs. After shopping it was time to pick up Scott. By the time I had reached Scott to pick him up, both girls were asleep. We had a great time today, but boy are we exhausted!!
Scott’s Part:
I really wanted to go to the Heroes panel at Comic-Con today to see the cast from the show. Everyone was supposed to be there. Because of that the line was outrageous. I got in line at a little after 11:00 for the 12:45 program, but was already behind enough people to fill the enormous room at least twice. However, I did get to see many of the props that were used on the show at their booth on the convention floor. On the got to see the traditional “Masquerade” show where people who have made some of the most elaborate costumes compete against each other for prizes. I got in line around 6:00 so I got a ticket to get into the room for when it started at 8:45. I was still so far back that I watched most of it on the big screens instead. When I left at 10:00 to meet Julie, it was only about halfway done.
I did go to the DC Comics panel to see many of the creators of the comics and spent the balance of the time exploring the enormous convention floor, meeting creators, searching for back issues, taking in the sights and spectacles, snapping pictures, taking videos and gawking at the costumes and people. A lot of people who come dressed come in groups. There was a group of guys who were dressed as just about every incarnation of Dr. Who and another group that looked like the main cast of Pirates of the Caribbean. I even recognized some of the people who were there from last year. There are tons of storm troopers and Batmen all over. I wonder who would win if they fought each other.
I posted more on Monitor Duty to describe more of what I saw. The day was both exhausting and exhilarating.
