Capistrano and Comic Con- Wednesday, July 19, 2006

We slept in again a little bit on Wednesday. Then we left Anaheim and headed towards San Diego.

On the way, we stopped at the Mission at San Juan Capistrano, one of the most famous of the California Missions. The history was interesting. What Fort Niagara is to the Great Lakes, the missions are to California. This one was destroyed in an earthquake in 1812, the same year that things were heating up on the Niagara frontier. The ruins of the church from that day are easily seen. The rest of the mission is very beautifully cared for. We didn't see any of the famous swallows, but the place was filled with flowers, birds, and butterflies. It was a hot but peaceful stop.

Then we went on to San Diego. We got our hotel room, which is actually more of a suite this time. It's got a living room/dinette area with a second TV and a couch.

We went in to the city that evening so that I could get registered for Comic Con and visit preview night. The traffic was pretty bad getting there, but once there it was tremendous. The crowds are already big and it's only "preview night." Over 100,000 fans are expected to attend. I did get to see a number of artists and writers that I recognized. The girls found a mall to visit while I was there.

The bad news is that Julie has been getting sick. She has a bad cold and even had a little bit of a fever last night. We hope the girls don't get it. The good news is that my friend Tony, a teacher with me, called us last night. I will be able to visit Comic Con with him after we meet him on Friday.
